The 2000 model was the W220, first year, they had some electrical issues with the airmatic suspension(there might be something more but this is only my knowledge so I may miss a few other issues) and people have told me to stay away from them, atleast the first 2 years...the 2003+ were better I think, facelift models. But if you are looking at a 1999, that should be the last year of w140 which are really nice because it was its the last year where they would fix all the minor bugs from the past years. About the engine, 1999 would have the older V8 engine, which is the M119...they have their ups and downs(require maintenance more often than the newer M113, lesser MPG etc but they all are 300+ hp engine so they don't lack in power and are also long lasting. I hope this helped, in short, if you ask me what S class to buy, it would either be a 1997-99 S class or 2003-2006 S class, these are the good years, but maintenance history is equally important. Good luck.

It all depends of the way the car was used and repaired by its previous owner. Make sure you do a test drive and check it with a specialist, before purchasing.

Since OP doesn't provide where they're from, it is possible he's looking at a 1999 W220. The 99 models were sold in the European and Japanese markets. Advice is sound to stay away from earlier W220 models. While 2003 models are improved, the 2004 is even better. I'd shun the 05 and 06 models unless they're 4matics. The 4matics were paired with the better, much more reliable 722.6 transmission while the standard 05 and 06 models had the more troublesome 722.9 in them.
