Question MB Offroaders

Or the potential to be.

I know well about the G-Wagon as I do love the military version and wish they could be sold here stripped down like that.

Before I bought my B200 Turbo, I was going to get a 2010 GLK for trail driving / fishing spot exploring, but wasn't too keen on the street look, 19" rims for such expeditions. (I ended up getting a 2010 Jeep GC Limited which is last of the MB inspired Chrysler products).

I know of the GLK overseas that has an "Engineering Package" that would be nice here on the GLKs.

So I ask, what is next in the line up to be a suitable "off roader"? That has the gumption, equipment and general specs to make double duty.

All info is appreciated, because if the Jeep goes, I want a MB to replace it eventually.

The W166 does have an off road package option and the reviews in the press have been very good about how well it can handle things when driving off the tarmac.

I passed the offroading itching, but still remember that few tries with ML ended up pretty miserable.
Still few members put bigger wheels on ML and used them in pretty rough terrain.
Per my experience, the clearance is more important than AWD in most of the situations
The electronic traction control sucks on rocks and gravel , while I think only G wagen has locking differentials

Shocked that both of you said the ML. Will have to research that. Just seems the ground clearance would be pretty poor.

Thanks guys!

ML was first digital SUV on the market and it was cheap enough to be sold in huge numbers.
That made it pretty popular vehicle for all kind of fun, unfortunately off-roading was out of reach.
I remember reading the story when a guy took ML on Rubicon Trail in CA.
The trail is known as "eating Jeeps alive" The guy took off bumpers from ML for the trip, took several boards with him and had assistance of G-wagen.
I doubt GLK has locking differentials, but that would be my starting question.
Enough said.

Here is an article where they mention the off road package from a 2013 review. It allows for adjustable ground clearance,
hill descent, presets for conditions, and a dedicated low range if needed.
