If you want just a code reader, get one of those $30 ones, that you can carry under your seat all the time.
For about the same money you can buy a plug and software for your laptop, that will give you more options to read and from there you can buy advanced software to read live data and so on.
I like gauges and I have SanGauge, what plugs to OBD and beside reading and clearing codes gives you option to read the sensors while you drive. Will give you instant and average MPG. Not always too accurate, but can give you idea how to drive the car with best economy.
