Ajbolit- I hear your frustration loud and clear.
Please understand this and it may help to clear the deck.
The Dealership is responsible for the Car. It's actually owned by a Bank elsewhere. The Dealership takes ownership and sells it.
However, it's actually owned by a Finance Company/Bank.
They have a perfectly good right to ensure that anyone who wants to test drive their cars/trucks etc. be qualified ahead of time.
You are taking a $70,000 Vehicle out for a Test Drive and Yes, they have a right to "check you out" before you put that Passive Key
in the Ignition!
Don't take offense. It's an Industry wide practice.
If you were test driving a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti or any other Luxury Brand, you would not even be able to go for a Test Drive without
Full Qualifications before you ever turn that key.
Try it. Go to those Super Exotics and you will be amazed.
Going back to the Dealership-sounds like their "Tact" needs some serious refining.
Why is it folks don't talk to each other instead of talking AT each other.
If Finance just took a moment to explain the process, I am sure you might have come away less injured, if at all.
Hey Good Luck!
Enjoy your New Mercedes Benz
Good For You!
