That's good question and one that has been discussed a number of times. It's hard to understand why a luxury manufacturer such as Mercedes has always offered a somewhat inferior Nav. system. I have difficulty in believing that it is a cost scenario as a "great" Nav. system would hardly impact profitability in cars priced as high as Mercedes.
That being said the answer to your question, from my experience only, is that yes you can update the command system with a newer version disc, however it seems like even after buying and installing the new disc, some features do not install, requiring a visit to a Star to open the missing features.
I just recently installed a latest version disc into my '05 CLK 500 and found that the command accepted the new disc and exhibited the new streets etc. However, I lost some features that I had before such as altitude and notification of chart position, i.e., latitude and longitude.
Perhaps there are some other more experience members that can shed some light on this phenomena.
