PRE-SAFE (not to be confused with Pre-Safe Brake) system can sense that a collision might be imminent, and help prepare for it in the moments leading up to it. Using a network of sensors (many of them already serving other safety systems in the vehicle) PRE-SAFE can detect certain conditions that suggest an accident is about to occur, such as extreme skidding. It then tightens the front seat belts, adjusts the front head restraints and passenger seat, and can even close the windows and sunroof, all to better prepare the occupants for more effective results from the restraint systems.
PRE-SAFE closes the side windows when the system's sensors detect side movements that suggest a possible rollover. A small gap is left near the fully closed position. Seat and head restraints adjust only when equipped with memory system.
PRE-SAFE Brake is an extention to Pre-Safe and typically found in packages that include DISTRONIC PLUS. If the system senses that a collision is imminent, its PRE-SAFE Brake feature automatically initiates up to 40% braking power, audibly alerts the driver, and engages the PRE-SAFE system. When the driver brakes, 100% braking pressure is instantly applied. And should the driver fail to respond, the system can apply full braking on its own, serving as an "electronic crumple zone" to help reduce the intensity of a collision.
