My late friend was German Car indy, so I know some of inside stories about parts brought by customers.
Even if mechanic make it clear there is guarantee, when the part fails - US customer will still expect free labor. The situation can not have happy ending to anybody and no reputable indy will go for it.
I do have similar issues in house repairs when customer buys water heater and ask me to install it. When WH breaks, there is part warranty, but labor still brings high cost. The best way I figured out is offer labor guarantee for extra fee.
Note "customer refused warranty" on the bill makes it much easier to understand.
