Mercedes Benz Service? Well that depends.

In that the Fairfield, CA dealership is only a short distance from home, rather than take the car to my trusted mechanic, I wanted them to take a look at an exhaust leak on my '78 450SEL should it become something bigger involving new parts. However to my astonishment they refused to look at it because it was too old! I thought of their recent TV ad they have showing with the theme of quality through the ages which shows a older gent next to his '70's MB, yellow if I recall, outside a barn in the snow. It should be followed by a disclaimer stating that the old guy pictured is a retired MB mechcanic who can do the work himself as the car is too old to be attended by the local dealership.
Attention MB USA! Have your Fairfield dealership post a sign "We service only new models"

We hear this all to often, sadly most mercedes dealers have little knowledge of the earlier cars, a good indie is by far the best route to take.

The Fairfield MB sold me chrome key for $162, when others in Bay Area had prices starting at $250
Having old technology can be difficult if you don't DIY. I own 2-cycle Detroit diesel in my motorhome. Even those were very popular engines 40 years ago, it might be hard to find good mechanic for it.
How many today's mechanic know how to tune carburetor?

Unfortunately today, there are few mechanics that fix anything.!!
Just replace, and replace, until they get it right.
Customer pays.!!

If it's a mere exhaust leak, taking it to a dealer is probably overkill anyway. Any exhaust shop is likely better equipped to deal with it.
