R230 Top and Locks Issue - Advice Needed
Hey all - Had several Mercedes over the years but hadn't joined a forum until now - forgive me if I posted in the wrong area. I currently own a silver 2003 SL500 (R230) and have developed issues with the soft-close system and retractable roof.
Locks and trunk stopped working a couple of months ago (and since I don't drive the car very much I haven't really put much time into it). The top stopped working a few weeks ago, however, and that's a much bigger issue. Panel kept saying "Trunk separator not closed", but after some testing, nothing seemed to be wrong with the separator or the micro-switch sensor. I have heard that anything related to the top (including pump issues) can throw all sorts of bizarre and potentially unrelated error codes / messages.
I could easily see the main pump in the trunk (left side under trunk cover) and it looked a little rough, so that's where I started. I purchased a rebuilt pump and had it installed - no dice. Mechanic tells me that the pump is working but there seems to be an issue with electrical paths and potentially the control board due to water getting in and corroding stuff (common issue I am hearing).
My question is this - is the larger, exposed pump only for the top and the other system, but the PSE (large black box under it) for the soft-close trunk, doors, pulse, etc? I'm confused about there being two separate vacuum systems in that area and any advice / clarification would be appreciated. If I purchase the PSE (entire large black box that apparently also houses the control board?), will that also fix my top issue?
Thanks in advance -
