Starting Problems on W210

Just swapped my transmission on my 97 e320. This is my third transmission. In case your curious, I bought the car in limp mode (stuck in second gear) and finally had an mechanic who wasnt experienced in these kind of jobs work on it for me and ended up taking the entire thing apart and didnt place one of the snap rings for one of the clutch packs. One of the clutches in the pack ended up slipping out basically destroying the entire thing so decided to get a junkyard transmission. Called the previous owner and she didnt answer but called back after i took it out and was on my way back home with the transmission in my trunk and said the transmission was jerking a bit when she took of, so she put it down for a year, then junked it. I decided to try it any way and exactly as she said, it was jerking, but because the fluid was critically low, and permanently damaged the transmission. But as i started it with this second transmission, i noticed that the starter would crank, stop, crank, stop, crank then the engine would start. NOW i have my third and final transmission in it, and the car is not starting at all, so what i did was connect a wire directly from the starter, not sure which part just know it was the smaller of the 2 bolts, and connected it to the positive terminal, then the car started. Shifts perfectly fine now because i changed the tcu along with all of that, but now i cant get the car started again, even when i do the direct line. What do you think the problem is? Your answer is very much appreciated

You do have ignition chip in the body of you blade key.
When something goes with key recognition, the engine might start with blade turning, but immobilizer will kill it second later.
This is a job for highly trained technician, so don't expect miracle on DIY forum. Observe blinking LED on the radio when you turn the key. In my car the LED goes of when the car recognize the key chip.
You can find more info in W210 section, where the system was used for 1 year only.
I think ML class of the era had the same or very similar system for several years.

I just checked what you said this morning and immobilizer is functional. It shuts off as I turn the key. Decided to take the starter out and took it to a shop and they said it's bad so I ordered a new one. Will post the outcome on this thread.
