I wouldn't mind paying $120K for a new Mercedes, but not if the trade in value is half that in just 2 years. Or a third in 4 years. That is like buying something at Saks and seeing the same at Target a year later, except for the $60-80 thousand difference.
You wanna play? You gotta pay.
It really is that simple.
Buy a new 90k mercedes, keep it for 3 years, and you will find that it cost you $1200 per month to drive that fancy benz.
Buy a new 120k mercedes, keep it for 3 years, and EXPECT to pay $1800 per month for the privilege.
You can buy the same benz that was 120k new, 3 years old, with 30k miles, for probably 70k. Keep it for 3 years yourself, and you will then find it "only" cost you $1200 per month to drive.
(approximations, but pretty close to the truth).
Best "value" in a car I ever had, was my trusty 91 Toyota Tercel, bought used with 50k miles in 93 for $5800. Drove it for 10 years and 150k miles and still sold it for 1k. Cost of depreciation was $40 per month........
