Mercedes rolls out production electric car

It is for Chinese market at this moment. Mercedes formed a joint venture with BYD to develop an electric car, and the production version is released yesterday. One full charge can go for 186 mile, and I think the price is quite affordable, when comparing with the Tesla.

Hope Mercedes will introduce a similar model in US market, and of course, using the Mercedes brand.

More specifications and photos of this car can be found here.

What I fail to understand is the cost of the batteries, if you hire them as in some others the cost is still more than the petrol equivalent over the 5 year life. Electricity is not free either.

It is still in politics as the $70,000 Tesla is subsidized by taxpayers.
It is little known fact that the small number of electric cars GM put on the market few years ago did cost about $5 millions a piece. GM never sold them, but leased and simply discontinued the lease.
Guess who paid the difference between few hundreds a month lease and 5 mils on total bill?
In most states electricity is way cheaper than gasoline, while main issue is that electric car can save you thousands on maintenance bills.
I guess you will not see electric in Europe soon as hard to beat propane at about $2 a gallon?
In US propane prices "somehow" follow gasoline prices. Talking about politics.....
Frankly I would buy small electric car as 90+% of our drives are small distances with 1 or 2 persons.
But not at the prices they really cost.
34 grands for electric Fiat 500 ????
