You CAN change the Diff Ratio! On my W204 at Least.

I have copies of MB STAR DAS/XENTRY 10/2008 and 01/2011 with Developer Mode and a Chinese C4 multiplexer.

I've been playing around learning how to use them. In both versions I can reconfigure the variant coding to change the differential ratio.

I want to install a Quaife LSD into my 2009 W204 C320CDI and thought if I could put a slightly lower final drive into it the car would absolutely fly. The C220CDI has a 2.65 compared to the C320CDI at 2.47. That's a lowering of the final gearing by about 7%.

So it can be done and I now know how to recode it so the ESP, speedo, transmission etc will all work fine.

I've attached a print screen showing the drop down box available where you can select which diff you have in the car. It lists all the MB ratios available.

Going from 2.65 to 2.47 will make the engine turning slower = lower acceleration.
Those things are not cheap and often require expensive tools to swap the gears, or are you considering buying whole differential?

My C320CDI has the taller ratio at 2.47 and I want to change to the 2.65 from the C220CDI = faster acceleration. The C320CDI has the 3.0litre V6 turbo diesel so they drop a taller ratio into it.

As the crown and pinion wheel are a matched pair the only way I could do it is to get a full C220CDI diff. When you buy the Quaife you swap the crown wheel onto the Quaife assembly and then put it back into the housing. So I'd have to do that on the C220CDI diff and hope it fits into the C320CDI.

But I don't know if the housings are the same. Would the axles fit and the tail shaft connect. Would it bolt in? It requires a lot of planning and research.

There are some tools required but they're not expensive and I need a press. The installation of the Quaife is reasonably straight forward and they give good instructions.

I would test the version coding change first before buying parts for the project. Many changes to theft relevant parts are possibly only once, when the part is taken into use.

Experts can do changes afterwards but with different tools, not with SDS.

Yes good idea. I could change the ratio and drive the car and see what happens. It should go into limp mode as the output shaft speed will be going slower than the software thinks it should so it will probably go into limp mode.
