If you are connecting it to the USB port, the Command interface will not read it.
A newer generation iPod Nano will connect via Bluetooth.
To be able to control an iPod from the Command screen, you need to have your car equipped with a specific connection.
Look inside your center console, right behind the USB port you will notice a plastic cover. This is where the iPod interface plug usually goes.
You can have it installed at the dealer.
I am using Bluetooth - and recently copied music on the built-in hard drive.
