needs interface module to correct communications with abs, transmission and instrument panel, intermittantley lights on dash flash, gauges stop operating and transmisson stops shifting then lights go out and transmisson begins shifting again. .................... Think of buying this car with issue above any ideas of cost to repair or should I stay away?

The car should be scanned by the MB Star computer to make sure of the issue.

The failure of the ETC module is rare unless the the pilot bushing on the 5 speed auto trans leaked ATF and it wicked into the ETC. In many cases the ETC can be removed, disassembled and cleaned to restore its performance after the leaking pilot bushing is replaced. ($20 and 15 minutes.)
If the ETC is total junk I would stay away from the car. It sounds like the current/previous owner(s) have not been been servicing the car well.
