Lost key

I have a 1985 Merc 380 (107). I've had it 25 years and lost the keys. I live on St. Thomas island in the USVI. There is no Mercedes dealership and the closet is 1,200 miles in Miami. MBUSA, says I must bring the car to them, in Miami, w proof of ownership to get a key.

I spoke to Marie w Customer Care (ext 4604) and she refused to help. Says my only option is put the 107 on a boat ship it to Miami and back at a cost of $2800. She also stated I shouldn't moved the car out of America. (PS, Marie, St. Thomas is part of America)

There is a Mercedes Dealer in Puerto Rico, but they also must have the car and I'll have to title it in the PR to get a key.

Does anyone know how I can get a key?

You have a car with plain mechanical ignition and no security system.
I can't believe none of the "locals" can pick the lock?

Are all the doors locked? - you didn't say.

If you can get inside, maybe the best idea is to find somebody to sell you a complete key + ignition switch for your car. For that era, does it have to be a Merc?

I'm sure your local Inde will have some ideas.

Thank you for all your suggestions, but you are missing the point. I want a Mercedes key for my Mercedes. I don't want to hotwire it. I want Mercedes USA to pull their head out of their ass and mail me a key for the car that I've owned for 22 years. Their policy about replacement keys is stupid.

Their problem is, how do they know that you are not trying to steal your neighbour's car?

Keyhole, because I have the title.

DR.X, thanks. I'll call him today. Living on a Caribbean Island, we expect things to be a bit tougher, but MBUSA has been pathetic.

I'm sure that you have.

However, no matter where you live, MB policy is not to deliver new keys by post. When I needed a new spare key, I had to go to the MB parts desk in person, and bring the relevant documentation with me.

I realize that you living in USVI gives you a problem (but there must be plenty of other advantages!) but how have you managed for MB spare parts for the past 25 years?

Good luck with the Classic Center..

Finally got a key. No thanks to MBUSA. Had a guy in the states, get a blank and a local locksmith laser a key. 3 weeks and $300. Mercedes Benz needs to change their policy and be more helpful to someone who's owned a car for 29 years. And to Maria at Mercedes Customer Care, (X4304) you suck.

You're probably right. Totally unreasonable of them to worry about security, including yours. Question: how is it that in 29 years you haven't had a spare key made? Or let me rephrase: you've had the car since Reagan's second administration, but haven't had another key made? Or let me rephrase again: you've had the car since the Challenger was still in one piece, but waited until now to make another key? And yet, MB is the problem?

Felicita e un bicchiere di vino con un panino.
