That was explained by Diesel Benz in another topic.
You have 2 options that dealers don't explain to buyers.
1. buy additional key that is programmed to next track on car computer and since the coding is known from the factory - the key will work straight from the box.
2. buy spare key, that will replace lost key and will go to the same track, just next slot. It will disable the lost key and that require some time on the car to reprogram.

We do have about 5 dealers in Bay Area and those close to the center wanted $250. But there is newer dealer 1/2 way between SF and Sacramento and looks like they are starving for business. Not only they are selling new keys for $180, but they gave me 10% discount just for asking.
Unfortunately visit to a dealer is the only way to get new key, but if your local dealer is gouging you, going on vacations you can check what the dealers on your trip do charge.
Some dealers will take the order over the phone and you have to show pink slip only at pickup. With 2-3 days delivery time it is not hard to arrange.
We only have one dealer so they are gouging everyone. I'll take that advice about going on vacation and checking out an area where there are more dealers. In the mean time, can I get a plain old fashioned door key made and just use the electronic key for the ignition?

Oh and I fixed my seat belt, I fixed my seat belt, (I'm doing a little dance) All by myself! The first piece of work I've done by myself! I've been so intimidated by the car. I CAN do this stuff! Now I have to change the light that comes on when you put the car in reverse. Why isn't there a Mercedes for Dummies book? LOL
