While the laptop systems are fine, I also like to have a regular stand-alone code scanner, like this basic unit:

$18 on Amazon.

And while you're waiting for something to arrive, so far as going to autozone, why not? They do that all day long (except in California, where it's illegal...). Get the code(s) they actually retrieve, not just the summary or diagnosis, then search them or post them...in the W211 sedan forum (that is native to your car). This general forum is really more geared to things that apply across the MB spectrum.

Good luck.

I borrowed a code scanner. I googled the codes and a bunch of problems came up, all for the same code. Gas cap wasn't one of them. I would like to get one that would tell me the real answer if available.

Sick 2000 SL 500

My baby is SICK.....! Took it out this morning and drove approximately 7 miles, all of the sudden the check engine light went on and the car started to shudder.....made it the other three miles home but it wasn't fun, thought she was going to die and time i took my foot of the gas now she's in the garage.....148,000 miles..
Do I have to have it towed to the shop and 200 diagnostic? or any ideas?
THANKS!

Do the $9.99 option above is not working for you? Why?

I never tried that one but, did try a generic reader. It gave generic codes that could be a number of things.

Maybe I'm to new to this and it did tell me?

Hi, Dmarvin.

Posting a question about a specific issue for a specific car in the "general" forum is likely to get you all kinds of responses, all over the map. This place is for general topics that are generally applicable or of interest to all MB models or enthusiasts.

May I suggest that you post your inquiry in the R129 forum that is specific to the car in your profile? R129 SL Class - Mercedes-Benz Forum

First thing I'd do though is get codes read. You're driving a computer on wheels, and the codes will help you understand what is wrong with the computer.

Good luck.

I'm going to guess that you're not purposefully trying to be frustrating.

But if you want help with your actual problem, then post in your car's specific forum.

And post the codes, too. If you keep on hiding the ball, no one here is going to be able to help you, even if you post in the forum that is native to your chassis.

Depending on the codes you're getting, google may not be your friend. Codes are just clues, and while they are often specific (like an O2 sensor heater circuit on bank 1, sensor 2) and point you to a particular part, other times they are more general and require you to start diagnosing a system (like a secondary air injection code). For the latter, search this site or other MB forums, but not the generic world. How you approach the detective work on the MB is different than how you approach it on a Ford truck.

Good luck.

Thank you for thinking of me. I didn't mean to frustrate you. I had a general post about trying to figure out a problem like we used to do it before computers. The thread developed a little and went into tools. I am interested in the reader. I don't remember asking for help with my problem. Although, I will take all the help I can get. If I were asking for help, I would have put it in the correct place with the codes.

Just as a side note for anyone interested, the light went out again.

The lights have nasty habit of coming back.
But you don't ask for help.
