Smart key reprogram

I used to have a 2007 SLK350 but got into an accident and totaled the car. I'm wondering if my keys would work if I got a different model merc, like a ML class?

Would my key fit in another merc? And I would think I need to get this reprogrammed at the dealership?Name: ImageUploadedByAG Free1388837913.139158.jpg

Sorry it cannot be done, the chip in your key was programmed for your car, some sell the keys for spare parts.

There are firms that will transfer the chip from your broken key into another, but that is something else.

I'm about to buy one similar on eBay. I have 07 SL550 and yours would work for me if you want to sell one or both. I need the shell as mine are worn with scratches. I'm going to insert my electronics (or attempt) into another shell. Just checking.
And sorry about your loss. Hope no injury!!

Auto electric shops in Eastern Europe do the reprogramming for about $50, but in US even dealers are not allowed to do anything with keys and only one location in Texas program NEW keys per VIN.
In another words - your key is having its shell value.
Sorry for the loss.
