W168 A class Starter problems
The wife has a 99 W168 A class with 137000kms. It suddenly developed that grating sound on start until the starter wouldn't engage. Its an auto so the motor came out and a new flywheel (and ring gear) was installed. The mechanic reinstalled the old starter as he thought it worked ok. Now 2000 kms later - same problem. It's as though the starter dog-gear isn't going far enough down the armature.
Anyone had this happen? Is it likely the (new) ring gear could be mashed already in the common spot where the engine stops on the compression stroke? It seemed to grate and grind no matter what position we turned (by ratchet thru the inner fender) the engine on the old flywheel, even though as it turned out only one position on the (old) flywheel was mashed. Damn, wish I'd also replaced the starter!! Suggestions? Other than this she loves the car. Bummer!!!
