ML won't go up hills. Please help!!
Hi, my beloved 2002 ML320 has run fantastically since I had it in 2003 until last week. While driving it suddenly lost power and it would get over 30 mph. I limped home and have been trying to locate the problem ever since. The 'check engine' light can on straight way so I've put on my OBD2 code reader and have had the following code:
P0304, P0306, P0305, P0300.
I have reset the codes and restarted the car several times, but the 'check engine' light comes straight on with the same codes.
The present mileage is 118,00 and it had a full set of new plugs at 97,000, so I don't think it is the plugs. I have done some research and it seems it may be the catalytic converter as all three cylinders are not working on one side. The car starts fine and idles ok for about 1-2 mins but then the revs go down and it shakes and judders and sometimes cuts out. When I rev the engine, sometimes I can get it up to 4000 revs and it holds fine but other times it won't rev at all no matter how hard I push down on the gas.
Today I decided to take it to my local garage and see if they can sort it out but my problem is that I live in a valley and when trying to get to the garage my ML will not go uphill!! I sat at the bottom of the hill with my foot full on the gas and the car won't budge!
No matter which way I go, I have to go up a hill to get anywhere. I limped back home and now the car is sitting on my drive. Does anybody have any idea what the problem may be so that I can sort it out myself or even just get it patched up enough to get it to the garage.
I really don't want to spend too much as we will be changing the car in the new year, but as it is now, it's not worth anything. I'm very handy and would like to do the work myself, if I can. I've had a look at the cats and they seem to be ok, no holes and no rattling. If I disconnect the cat to test for a blockage, would that work? I've also had a good look at the engine and everything seems fine, no broken wires and the spark plug leads look ok. I have checked the air filter and I have also run the car with the MAS disconnected and it didn't make any difference.
Thanks in advance.
