Mbrace upgrade? Needed?

I scheduled a "service a" with a local MB dealer. Prior to the appointment, the service department called me and left a message stating that my 2013 GLK 350 needed a Mbrace software upgrade that will take 2 hrs to complete.

- is there a charge for this upgrade?

- Do I need this upgrade since I do not subscribe to mbrace?

- should I get the upgrade in the event that a subscription to Mbrace is made in the future (myself or if car sold to another?)

Thanks for all replies!

If you do not use Mbrace you do not need it, however if it is under warranty it should be no charge. It should be updated now for the reasons you stated.

They actually offer upgrades to cars with the digital systems such as our '05 S Class and told us it was a two hour job as well. We passed.

We got the free trial and they installed the Mbrace module to replace tele-aid and I hated Mbrace so we cancelled it. Then they tried to bill me for the hardware. I looked at the "fine print" and there was no penalty for me cancelling after 90 days. So I made an appointment to have the Mbrace hardware removed. The dealer decided not to waste their time or mine.

Only in a case of it being under warranty or being able to reason with MB would I get the update.

I have DirectTV and use iPhones. If Apple or DTV were to charge me for updates for plans I pay a monthly fee for I would be livid. If Mbrace customers don't pay for this update and the company MB pays to run Mbrace starts to lose too many customers they are going to have to do it for free. IMO charging customers for this if the vehicle is under warranty or the car is a subscribed Mbrace vehicle then there should be no fees at all.

I would beg every Mbrace user to refuse the update if they are going to get charged for it and let the Mbrace people squirm. Once they lose enough money they will be reasonable about how to treat paying customers.

When I replied I was assuming it was a no charge upgrade. There is no way I would pay to upgrade something I was not using.

But this reminds me that I was having phone trouble; I have BT capability using the MB puck. It was diagnosed as something wrong with my TeleAid and I wasn't a subscriber. The CPO warranty paid to upgrade TA to the newer digital system hardware. I never did decide to subscribe to that and I don't if I could use Mbrace even if I wanted to.

UPDATE:

I decided to go ahead with the Mbrace update. Although I have not signed up for Mbrace service, I did the upgrade in the event that I did so in the future.

There was no charge for the upgrade and the service dept provided a loaner vehicle due to the fact that the upgrade would take several hours.

I also had a "service A" performed while the vehicle was in the service dept. ( $225 cost after applying the local dealers coupon of $25 off).

Thanks to all who have replied to my questions!

Thank you for replying with the info that in your case it is a free update.

I wonder if it is free for cars that are not under warranty. I am going to check with the dealer I used to work for in the early 90s.
