W210 fuel tank issue

Help with gas tank,
I have a 01 E320 wagon 198k miles. I suspected a faulty fuel pump when the car started running rough and had noise coming from the fuel pump. I replaced the pump and filter (OEM parts). The new pump makes even more noise and there is a lot of vibration coming from the discharge hose of the pump. Suspecting other issues inside the tank, I pulled the fuel sender out to have a look. Found a piece of white plastic (looks like a hair comb) that matches part of the plastic assembly inside the tank near the top driver's side. Also found a piece of rubber looking seal or grommet in the tank as well. Now I am wondering if I have a fuel flow constriction as a result of disintegrating parts in the tank. It's hard to see much even with a mirror.
Any ideas other than a new fuel tank?

Please join us on the W210 forum, found in the sedans section. Even though you have a wagon, there are several other owners there, plus there is no separate wagon section.
