Driving cross-country in your Benz? (cross-post)

(Note to admin/mod: I had originally posted this in the R171 thread, but now realized that I actually want feedback from the entire community here, since I'm asking for suggestions of alternate vehicles. Feel free to delete the other thread, thanks!)

Hi all,

I'm planning to go on a road trip across the US and back, within a 3-week period in May 2014.

Details of the trip are here:
http://WakeUpAndCode.com/road-trip/

Given the long distance of the trip, do you personally think it would be a good decision to take my 2007 SLK350 on this road trip? I bought it brand new in late 2006, and it has around 55k miles on it, as of late 2013 (that's 7 years).

I haven't had any major issues with the car that couldn't be fixed, and it has had all its recommended services.

Thanks in advance!

Shahed C

A little faith in Mercedes Benz PLEASE?
I just purchased 2004 model with 140k on it and it is 3000 miles from home. Will fly to pick it up in few days. Do you think I am worry about making it?
I bought several MB in 2000-3000 distance from home and never had a problem to make it. Last purchase 2 years ago was W210 with over 250,000 miles on it, but it was diesel. Made the 3200 miles (some shopping on the way) just fine, although thermostat broke on the trip.

Looks like you are going to be in my neck of the woods (I90 Albany area) Shoot me a PM if you would like to meet up for a coffee.

I personally would not do a road trip of this length in a SLK as it is too small for me. If you find the SLK that comfy then have fun!

An old school saying is it is good to drive the car occasionally over a long distance to "clean up the system". Not sure if this is true for modern engines. The problem here is not the car, it's your back!

On the other hand, would you consider a rental? How many miles does your trip entail? Do you want all this mileage, wear-and-tear, rock chips to your car? SLK is a great sport coupe but it is not that comfortable in long trips. A rental (compact or subcompact) will offer you more space and better mileage. More importantly, you do not have to "baby" a rental like you do with the SLK.

I myself drive a w209, another coupe. I live in Toronto and I visit Montreal often which is about 350 miles one way. I usually rent for these trips and it would cost me $80-90CAN for 3-day unlimited mileage. Last trip I rented a Chevy Cruze for 2 days, rental cost was $65 but I probably saved $40 in gas.

Drove my SLK 3 times across the country and never had so much great performance & fun! Mostly the I40 / Rt 66 corridor...

Kajtek1,

I do have faith, this is my second Mercedes purchase. :-)

But it's very important to know what I'm getting into, especially when going across the country and back, within 3 weeks.

Issues I've had early on:
* when the car was new in late 2006, the heating didn't work properly
* In Spring 2007, I then realized the cooling didn't work properly
* the nav buttons started sticking, they replaced the whole nav unit
* once, the car just stopped running on the road and all the dash lights started blinking (I think it was a solenoid failure, I forget)

Recently, I just had 1 issue when the SRS light came on, and they had to replace a seat belt, not sure why though.

But, I want to learn from the experience of the community, to see what others have to say.

Let's get in touch when the date nears. Although the trip is to meet up with game developers, it would be great to meet up with fellow Mercedes enthusiasts if I end up taking the Benz. (My other car is a Mazda6, and I may get a new/used hybrid for the trip)

The trip is going to be around 8,270 miles, maybe less since I will probably skip Boston. I laid out the entire planning/schedule spreadsheet on the link I posted.

What car company would you recommend for renting a car for 3 weeks with unlimited mileage?

ok cool, I am leaning towards the SLK, but also concerned about the fuel costs. As I mentioned above, my other car is a Mazda6, but I don't really want to take a mid-size sedan with just me in the car. I also mentioned the possibility of buying a new/used hybrid, which would be best for gas, but I'm not sure if I want to purchase yet another car at this time.

I am from Toronto, so rates differ. Every time I go on a Montreal trip, I would check for specials. I usually rent from Budget, Enterprise or whoever cheaper. All their rental cars here are 2013 or even 2014.

I always book the cheapest car group but when I pick up the car, they usually have no subcompact left and I will have a choice to bigger cars. Check your local rental companies for specials. I just checked budget online and without discount, a week rental is $137CAN. Also, I use my gold credit card so I do not buy insurance.

For the mileage of your trip, I would not drive my own car, not a MB, not even a Mazda-6. I am not surprised that you will actually save money to rent.

Again, this has nothing to do if your SLK can handle the trip. My main concern is the wear-and-tear to your car. Tires, brakes, oil change are the 3 service items that come to my mind.

Thanks mis3! Those are great points. I will look into rental first.

Since I am promoting indie game development on Xbox One, I will also look for sponsors via Microsoft and their partners, in case they are interested in supporting the initiative.

Sounds like the SLK is not building too much confidence.
I drive E class for lot of years and even the 1987 I sold last year runs perfectly for my family.
Since that sounds like business trip - renting is a valid option. Years ago I had new ML320 and needed to do long trip that include trip to Texas and I added 3 days in Las Vegas
Rented Ford sedan from Hertz, in the years where they did not have tracking in them, so unlimited mileage was very cheap for a week.
Logged 4300 miles in 8 days and had tax deduction on the rental.
