I switched several cars to synthetics (even my lawmower and tractor) and have excellent results. Lot of engines that used to take lot of oil, came close to no oil use.
That usually comes with me fixing some seals, so can't give the synthetic full credit, but the best sample is my Ford Powerstroke.
This engine is using motor oil compressed to 3000 psi for powering fuel injectors.
Once the high pressure oil pump loose the prime, it takes lot of cranking.
So I bought this Powerstroke just shy of 300,000 miles and even it run very well, with no blowby, whenever I park it for longer than 3 days, then I had to spend several minutes on cranking
Now 2 years/20,000 miles later on synthetic Rotella than no longer happen. The engine takes some oil, but I can make 10k with 1 or 2 additions.
BTW the wash away sludge - never happen to me, but I had good luck to the engines.
