Looking for W210 comfort in SUV category
I've had two Mercedes W210's in the past (not with sports seats) and I remember them as being the most comfortable cars I ever owned. I could happily drive 10 hours across Europe and get out of the car without any fatigue at all.
Although I like my current BMW 545 (E60), it doesn't match the MB in the comfort stakes. I recall my MB driving days as being more relaxed and definitely more comfortable. The BMW tends to make me drive more aggressively. It's fun but dangerous for the driving licence.
So, I'm now thinking of my next car. I was thinking of a used BMW X3. It fits all the luxury, style and performance needs I have, but I can't help harping back to my W210.
My question then ... does anyone know of a Mercedes (or anything else for that matter) that is as comfortable as a W210, but has the mid-range SUV 4x4ness of an X3/X5.
I don't know if I'd like an ML or GLK in terms of comfort. Sitting in one in a used car showroom or having a test drive won't necessarily tell me that either. I'm hoping for some first person testimonials from people who had a W210, drove long distances in it, and switched to something in the mid-range SUV class and was suitably impressed with it.
Why do I want a mid-range SUV? I like the high (but not too high) seating position of an X3, Q5, GLK. The low-range SUV X1, Q3 are barely higher up than a BMW 5 or an E class. The high-range X5, Q7, ML are a bit high (but aren't out of the running yet). I live in Bavaria and we seem to get more and more snow days each year, so I really want to be switching to 4x4 instead of being housebound.
