Wheel & Tire Insurance...
My new CLS550 (with 19" AMG wheels) will be ready for pickup on Monday and I'm giving careful consideration to the wheel and tire insurance issue.
My usual thoughts on insurance are that it's a straight gamble at best and tantamount to a legalized protection racket at worst. If the dealers weren't coming out ahead on the deal, they wouldn't be selling it. That said, I'm not sure whether it constitutes a good gamble from my perspective.
In the casino, I always know the odds and play to maximize my advantage. Here, the odds aren't readily calculable. Without inviting a recitation of statistically insignificant personal experiences (I bought it and never needed it, I bought it and it saved my wallet, I passed and never cared, or I passed and took a big hit), I'm wondering whether anyone can offer some cogent means of parsing the odds.
I live in central Florida where the roads are excellent. While I haven't had a flat down here in the ten years since I moved south, I've also never had low-profile wheels.
FWIW, my dealer has offered the wheel/tire coverage for the term of my lease (39 months) for $877.
