does the "Steering column'' on my 82 300sd really need to be replaced
Hello all thanks for taking time to see if you can help me.
i recently bought a great 82 300sd in california, and drove it to massachusetts. everything was perfect as the mechanic said it would be. i then used it another 4000 miles in massachusetts, and everything was still great. so i am currently spending time with family in mexico, i decided that instead of leaving this car at my parents to be driven just to keep it good while im gone for 4 months, id let a friend use it. she even gave me 400$ to use it as it is very helpful to her with her kids getting places.
now she says the key wont turn, so seems like a replacement of the ignition is needed. im willing to pay for that. she brought it to her mechanic. he said the entire 'steering column' needs to be replaced. first it would be $900, then we she said i could definitely not swing 900, because my cap was 500, he told her he would do it for 500.
is this legit? he is (obviously) not a Benz dealers mechanic, and is not my families usual mechanic.
could he have just found the parts cheaper? or does my steering column not need replacing at all and he is taking advantage of her ignorance to cars and my absence? should i just get my mom to use AAA to tow it to her mechanic? im lost and dont have much good guidence... anything helps, thanks !
