You want a bare bone stripped down MB get a W123 240D with a 4 Speed Manual transmission! Manual windows, no sunroof, no A/C. One of the very few cars in the world I think that be so basic but so classy and beautiful I love the old W123'S

I cannot say I have ever had reliability issues with a MB Product.

I bought 9 or 10. Don't call it "own" because some of them went to family members, but I am still the one working on them
Don't know what you buy, but I enjoy driving them for years for pennies. The biggest hit in MB ownership was $1200 CV joint on 4-Matic when the aftermarket did not exist yet.
I think average repairs on them would come to about $50 a year and yes, most of them were over 10 years old and the $50 is often result of PO care.
Our original ML320 during 13 years in family averaged less than $30 a year in broken parts
For the record - ABS and other gadgets come in US to what is called now E-class in 1987. That might be different in other countries.
