I am one of those mechanically-inclined owners who had to learn car electronics the hard way.
Once I got hold of basics I started to like it. In our W210 I can access the sensor values not taking my foot off gas at 80 mph.
Any problem, I plug in scanner, read the code, come to this forum and 95% of the time the answer is already waiting for me.
To top it, the cars are mechanically bulletproof, while spending a hundred or hundred fity on a sensor every 4 years is not a big deal.
That said, it was the first generation of sensors from over 10 years ago that was a nightmare. If you read topics from that era - members have been replacing CPS and MAFs by the buckets.
Once the sensors have been upgraded - they works for long years.
