That Ol' Power Outlet "Thingy" Question....Again

There are a lot of threads about providing/cobbling an outlet to plug in a charger for a "modern" GPS unit, cell phone, etc. These break down into two schools of thought--

1) Rewire to provide a separate outlet (frequently in the glove compartment)
2) Wrap thin plastic around the charger and/or bend its contacts out to "fit" the slightly too large MBz cigarette lighter female housing.

Now my question (and no, I have not measured with a micrometer before I'm asking this...)--Has anyone removed the heating element from the male lighter assembly and adapted the remaining male housing itself to accommodate a plug-in charger or tried to do this and failed. I'd appreciate knowing either way.

Best Wishes--Carl

Are you looking to create a separate socket? Is there some reason a standard car charger plugged into the cigarette lighter socket (or the optional 12V socket on the rear of the center console) doesn't work for you?

Should note that on my '03 W208 CLK, there is no optional socket and that the lighter socket is slightly too large for a standard car charger. May/would not apply to later model cars. Hence the need for the question.
