I went the other way: a 2000 Outback Limited wagon to a 2001 E320 4Matic wagon. The Outback was nice enough, right up until it started pumping gasoline into the engine oil...after I'd dumped $3K or so into repairs. I did that with the expectation that I'd have the car for a few years, but a $2500 engine on top of that in a $3000 car just didn't make sense.
I'm very happy with my E-class. It's roomier, more comfortable, and drives better and gets better gas mileage than the Outback ever did. My opinion of the Outback might have been better had it had a six instead of that anemic 2.5L normally aspirated four, but they didn't offer that in 2000.
Yeah, the E-class is a bit rusty in weird spots. I didn't buy it to impress anyone but me, though, so I don't care much as long as it keeps the rain out and doesn't fall apart on the highway.
Different strokes and all that. Enjoy your Outback.
