Should I buy this car? It has a NAM title...

I responded to a craigslist ad in my area for a 1998 slk230 with 37k miles for $6999. I went to check out the car and everything worked well and it drove fine, but when I did the carfax check it showed up that the title is a branded NAM title meaning not actual mileage due to the odometer either breaking, being replaced, or tampered with. I talked him down to $6k and then said I would come back later tonight to give it one last look over before buying it. Here is the carfax and a picture of it. I just wanted to get your guys opinion on what I should do.

Welcome to the forum.
The seller is not offering any explanation?
The price is low, so can't demand too much for a clean Mercedes.
I still would do compression test to make sure they engine is not wear out.
How is the blowby?

I can't begin to guess what the NAM title's discount in value fo the car might be. Aside from that, though, it's ultimately your call. Do you like the car otherwise? Get it to an independent Mercedes mechanic for a prepurchase inspection. If the price of the car plus the repairs he says it needs don't exceed what you're willing to pay, then go for it.

Certainly get a pre-purchase inspection. $80-160 well spent

Best of Luck

When I worked at dealerships if a customer wanted to trade a car that had NAM in the situation they would get almost nothing for the car and went right to auction.
Too many variables and impossible to sell retail on a dealer lot.

As a private buy the car would only sell for 30-50% of its private party value around here, and I am only about 100 miles north of Vernon Hills.
