2000 CL500 shuts down

When the gauge shows around 90 ℃ the car shuts down. doesn't restart until it goes down to 80. Changed the thermostat and the water pump, no leaks detected anywhere. There's a humming noise between 1000-2000 rpm. I can't figure out why the car is shutting down. Anyone has any advise, experience with this? The help would be much appreciated.

I am wondering if a crankshaft position sensor has gone south.
