Radio has a mind of its own

I drive a 2000, ML320. I was rear-ended on the freeway about two months ago. Since then, my radio/cd player has been cutting in and out, and today, listening to the radio on the way to work, the display flashed between night and day mode, then opened itself, and is now stuck open and the radio won't power on.

A few weeks ago, the radio display went dark, while still playing music, and the controls were dysfunctional. To fix it, I just disconnected and reconnected the battery, and all was well (hoping that works again).

MY QUESTION: Could the fact that I was rear-ended at about 30mph have anything to do with the recent radio/cd player issues, or is it merely coincidence, and old age and summer heat are to blame?
