I know suction cups can be strong ( I use them for carrying 190lb granite slabs) but they don't guarantee long term performance.
Having one without safety strap? Is that legal?
Safety strap is provided and wedges between roof and trunk deck lid. I personally don't use it as I've come to rely upon the "staying power" of the 6" suction cups which have a self monitoring system built into their pumps as to alert the user of need to recharge the suction (pump em). BTW, my bike weighs 14.2 lbs wet.
Have driven full days, through rain and at speeds up to 85 MPH with no problems. I just check them at each start/stop, and pump them up with their built in pumps when they indicate the need for it. Also use a light mist of water on the cups as to promote a more positive seal against my polished/waxed paint finishes.
Again, I am not affiliated with the manufacturer and could care less what others do, I was just sharing what I've found to be a viable alternative to mounting a fugly receiver hitch on the ass ends of my SL 550, my wife's CLS 550 or our classic 560SL for that matter.
