New to the forum but been gathering info here since buying my '87 560SL. She's known as "Q". Former owner named her after she got her registered and the first 3 letters of the license plate were KEW. I went for the shorter version.
Q was an impulse buy which I've never done before. I had recently began a new life with a new partner after 20 years in a previous marriage. Talking with my new gal, she told me about the '83 280SL she had years before. Grey market car with a 5 speed *sigh*. While looking at on the computer for pics of one like hers, she came across Q for sale, just half an hour away. Went to see her just for fun. Pulled up, saw her, fell in love, bought her home. (with some coaxing from my SO) She's in overall very good shape, very clean but with the typical 25 year old problems. Things like the center vent issues, visor clips that snapped, etc.
Oh, and as of last night... Timing chain failure.
Should have done a little more homework. Oh well.
The good thing is I was a professional mechanic for years and still spin wrenches constantly. Between my GF and myself and our 6 kids from our previous marriages, I maintain a ten vehicle fleet.
Haven't dug into the engine yet, but hoping damage is minimal since the chain jumped when I went to start her. Thinking I might just pull the engine and go through it that way. Haven't pulled one on a MB yet, so any advice is welcome.
Anyways, love the car and look forward to learning more about her her. Drive safe!
