Service intervals

how does the computer decide on service intervals is it time or mileage
i dont drive very much and i dont think i should change the oil as often as the computer says
could i skip an oil change or just change the filter

What year and what model?
US models till 1999 had no timer on FSS, so you could drive on the same oil for years.
After 2000 they made 1 year for US and 2 years for the rest of the World (not sure what Canadians got).
How the computer determinate intervals is a secret. MB representative like to give a story about oil quality sensor, but nobody have ever seen one.
I think it is a program, that depends on engine load and oil addition adjust the initial 10,000 miles. Funny part I was towing heavy with my ML320 and still average 13,000 miles intervals on DINO oils.
