Need Input - Found a '79 280SL 4 Speed...
Just joined the site and looking forward to talking with you.
I've been wanting a vintage Mercedes convertible for as long as I can remember and think we found a good one. It's a 79 280SL 4 speed with 70,259 original miles. New shocks, brakes and Michelin tires. 1 panel - rear left quarter panel - has been repainted and has a quarter size rust spot along the edge of the wheel well, and one other small rust spot near the rear 280sl emblem.
Interior is good, black leather worn like a 30+ year old car would be but no rips, tears, etc. Must be a 'basic' model as no A/C and no power windows. Car has been garaged, no smoking, no musty, funky old car smell, etc.
Hard top, soft top all in good condition.
Car seems to misfire upon start up but runs strong. Husband is a mechanic and did a thorough check, all seems pretty good to him. We aren't expecting perfect by any means.
No documents or original import info, etc. but has the entry point/buyer info on the door jamb plaque.
Our negotiations with seller have brought us to a price of $7K.
Here's where I could use your input...is $7K too much? Anything we should be looking for that we're missing? Husband went under the car - no rust under floor boards, along drive train, it's clean. Just the two small spots and we know we have to get those fixed ASAP so it doesn't spread.
Would appreciate your feedback - hoping to pick up car in the morning.
