Yes the 38 pin connector was present that late, but now on any 98 US spec cars or later MB dealers just use the ODB II port and they are able to use the pins in sequenced combinations to get to all the data required for reading codes and coding control units.

Do you need a multiplexer for this or will an OBDII connection to a laptop work? Do you need a special MB program?
