I had a 1999 Ford F250 Super duty Crew cab 4x4 and got stuck. My wife pulled me out with our 98 ML 320 then towed me down main street just to embarrass me. We sold the pickup the next spring and kept the ML.

LOL. I get my 2500 truck stuck in a collapsed culvert leading into a hayfield. My wife brings the straps down and I yank the 2500 out of the culvert.
Amazing pulling power in low range for the ML.

Bare in mind that W163 is first popular vehicle that come to USA with electronic traction control. The same years trucks with 4 WD do have fixed central differential, but 2 wheels with low traction will make them stuck. ML will pull on one wheel.
Our ML320 did not do too good on California offloading.
The 1 or so second delay before traction kicked in would dig the wheel down to the axle on gravel, while on rocky trail would make the car loosing the momentum. It would eventually move from stop, but the spinning took big tool on the tires.

It seems at least 90% of buyers of such vehicles disagree with you. Never mind the GL, how many Gelandewagens do you see off-roaded?
