That sounds like a seized pump to me. If it only vibrated rather than spinning it probably was unable to turn and cooked itself right then and there.
You ought to put your location in your profile and complete it. If you are in a state which mandates ethanol in the fuel and you are a boat guy you should already know what happened to the fuel system. I would suggest you take the tank while it is still out and pour a light mixture of water and muriatic acid into the tank. BE CAREFUL! THIS IS A NASTY CHEMICAL! It will etch your concrete if you dump it out on the driveway. Nice thing about it though is that it eats rust almost instantly. Put that in the tank and shake it around with some good size bolts. Pour all the gunk out and retrieve (ALL) the bolts. Then flush the tank again with some gasoline. That will eliminate a major element to your headaches for the fuel system.
Also, I love that body style. Tell your son he is a very lucky guy and there are grown men who are jealous of his car.
To reiterate - flush that tank with the NASTY chemical, then flush the tank with gasoline. Check for leaks before reinstalling as the acid will reveal any pinholes in the tank by eating the rust out of them. Oh, and for God's sake - DO THIS OUTSIDE. The fume could KILL YOU if you are overexposed. When I was about your son's age I "burned" my lungs with this stuff.
