Exclamation 1985 190D...head gasket? please help ASAP!!!!

I have a bad problem and dont really know where to ask at...so I shall post it here and let the admin move it if they want to...

I have a 1985 190D...the engine has 170,000 miles on it and today while taking my girlfriend home, a big poof of smoke came out the side as all my oil sprayed all over the exhaust manafold...the smoke was from the manifold I am 100% sure so that does not worry me...what does is...the head gasket...that seems to be where the oil came out of...there is no coolant in it so that is good news so far...but I have several issues...

#1 this engine is one I put in the car last year and it has been running great, except this...the old engine we had the head off and apart and everything else...the timing chain...a guy posted a tool somewhere for it, but the link was old when I got there and I have no idea how to get it off...was told a slide hammer could get the pins for the guide rails off...

#2 the head itself...to get it off...what all does it entail? when I pulled the head of the old engine off, we broke a lot of things because they were already under 600,000 miles of stress and most were too broken after that engines problem...

#3 the head gasket...how expensive are they usually and if the coolant isnt in the oil is it still necessary to replace the waterpump...I wouldn't understand why...

#4 How do I even know that it is the head gasket...the car still runs perfect and now that half the oil has leaked out it doesn't even leak...I have not tried putting any more oil back in, I simply started it to see when we were stranded along the highway, then shut it off, drove it up on the trailer, and drove it up on the ramps at home where it sits now...and we started it and held the accelerator on about 3/4 throttle for about a minute to see what it would do...no oil shooting out now, no drips...nothing except the radiator leaking (which has been going for 3 days now and I am about to replace) I thought it was something that had busted my oil pan at first until I realized the wind was blowing straight through instead of up because of the fan...it plastered the side of my once perfectly shiny new looking engine compartment in oil...but there was no oil around the pan after I wiped everything down and there are no leaks...the leak seems to be right around the timing chain area near the #1 piston...but were it a head gasket, would it not cause me to lose compression in my #1 cylinder? The car still runs great...

can anyone help me with any of this? I don't want my baby to go to the scrap heap, but I don't have the money to keep it running at this rate...

Wednesday is my birthday and I need the car to be running in order to be able to spend it with my girlfriend...she has missed the past 3 and neither of us want it to be 4...should I just give up and take it to a mechanic, or can I do this at home...we have tools...lots of tools, we have car lifts, we have another engine to use as a schematic, we have...everything...what do you guys suggest?
