TCM compatibility for different mercedes models

I have a 1997 Mercedes e320 which I have loved having for years. Although some people have MBs for the brand I simply love specific models for their performance and durability. At any rate I ran into the TCM issue which I found out the dealers charge close to $1800.00 for parts and labor that I cannot justify taking that money away from my children. After researching the defective part:

Siemen Manufacturer Part Number: 0205458832, 0 20 545 88 32
ECG 5WK33888

I found out there are several similar parts for the different C and E classes.

So my question is I found a similar part for $50.00:

2000 Mercedes E320 EGS Transmission Control Module Part# 0245458532

I research the part and found out that some sellers claim it is compatible with all e320s from 96 to year 2001. Is that correct?

I see you did not found yet the W210 section where your car belongs.
One of the most active section on the forum with stickies that already covered a lot of transmission troubles.
Per your description I conclude that your computer board might get contaminated with ATF.
Most of the time $10 can of MAF cleaner is all it takes to put the car on its wheels, while replacing $5 plug adapter would make the repair permanent. ,,,, at least for next 16 years.
