Red face Purchasing Used S-Class Benz

Hi! I'm considering buying a used S420 or S500, year rage 95-01 for about $5K or less. I'm looking for any tips on what specifically to look for as far as maintenance and any "trouble signs". Also what do you guys think about these models?

When I find an ad for one online would I look like a dic* if I took a code reader/scanner with me to check it out for any issues? I also need help finding a scanner/reader that will work with these models and also show live stats. If I have to plug it into a laptop that's fine. Any suggestions on equipment?

Thanks guys for ANY help!!! In advance.. much appreciated!!!!!!!

I think the seller would be a d*ck for NOT allowing you to use a code reader.

Last summer I almost pulled the trigger on a 1999 SL500 at Carlisle car show (I was in a depressed mood and thought it would cheer me up). Check engine light went on during my otherwise joyful test drive, seller said it must be the gas cap. I said that I would get my reader and be back in a few minutes, he said he can't allow me to use one as it might damage the car's electronics. I imagine a PPI would have been out of the question. He did save me a lot of money!

If the seller has something to hide, he can always say no to PPIs, to OBD readers, etc. Even to test drives. There will always be someone who comes along more naive and buys without investigating first.

Damage the electronics. That is rich. If ever there was a sign to walk away from a buy, that is it.

"There nothing that can get expensive more than a cheap Mercedes"
You will find that motto over the forum lot of times.
Planning to buy complicated car for less than 5 % of its original price is not giving you margin for finding a good one.
You will find pretty long thread about purchasing E-class in W210 section.
Most of the advices will apply to S as well.
