Strange SUV spotted- need ID

I work at a resort, and the other day, I saw a MB suv I didn't recognize in the slightest sitting in the valet lane. I wasn't able to snap a picture, but as best I can remember, it looked early to mid 90's, similar in form and function to a Nissan Pathfinder of that era with proportions closer to that of an FJ Cruiser. I saw it from the back- it had the tri-star emblem and a 4-digit number (3200 or something?) where the model designation usually goes- no letter.
I would assume it was just a ghettoed up clunker with badges stuck on, but the SUV itself was foreign to me. The driver and passengers were African, so my thought was perhaps it belonged to a diplomat or someone who was able to bring in a foreign market car. Thing is, I can't find anything close to it on the interwebs, and it's driving me nuts.

Any Ideas?

Those were actually designed and made by Ssangyong and powered by a mercedes engine. That model was the Ssangyong Musso IIRC.

Now, If you think that's "unpopular" check their latest model out
