Front passenger seat adjustment disabled when split rear seat is down
I recently started using my wife's 2005 E320 4MATIC Wagon for work. Something odd has started to happen when I try to lay the back seats down to take advantage of the space in the back of the wagon.
I use a couple of golf-bag sized hard travel cases in my business. In order to fit them in the car I have to lay the rear seat down. When I release the passenger side rear seat lock, the front passenger seat moves very far forward and the seat back tilts straight up. I assumed this is a feature and it's programmed to happen in order to give me the clearance needed to lay the rear seat back down easily. Unfortunately, after I've laid the rear seats down, the front passenger seat won't move back into a usable seating position. I can't get it to slide back and I can't get the seat back to recline even though there is a good 8" of clearance behind the front seat! This makes the front passenger seat unusable when the rear seats are laid flat. It happens whether I lay down one side of the split seat or both sides. So, my questions are, first, is this a feature or a malfunction? Second, if it's a feature, is there any way to defeat it? Finally, if it's a malfunction, is there any way to reset the seat positioning system?
Thanks in advance for any help.
