anyone program their own smart keys?

I lost a key to my 2012 C300 and ran across this:

AK500 Key Programmer External HDD

based on the cost along for the programmer and about $75 for a key on ebay I'm figuring I'd be $150 ahead of the game.

I have not called my local dealer but from what I've read the smart key from the dealer is about $300?

I have sort of the same problem - I bought a 2012 C300 and only got 1 key ( I wasn't smart enough to ask for 2 ). When I bought a second key on eBay, the local Mercedes dealer told me that there was no way to re-program it. When I called Mercedes, they agreed.

Then I saw your post. Did the gadget you bought work? Do you still have it? I'd like to borrow it, try it, use it, and return it to you if possible.

Your new C300 should have been delivered with 2 keys, so request one from your dealer. Of if you're the 2nd owner, ask the previous owner for the spare.

As for the above link, the $75 device is only the HDD for the key programmer, which costs $360. I can't see how you'd be ahead.

It appears the OP didn't actually buy the HDD. He only asked for opinions.

You can not reprogram, a previously coded smart key. I would not spend my money on that device. Dont be "cheap" buy a remote from a dealer that is coded by the factory from their database, keys come in different varieties. There is an "additional" category which will work out of the box. There is the "replacement" which will wipe out the missing key but could take up to 45 minutes in the ignition to sync. The repacement requires your car to be hooked up to the MB computer to read which codes are in your car. My dealer screwed up and the repacement voided my other good one. They had to order another, but remember there are only 24 slots for remotes in the car and 3 are used as shipped, other than that computer boards have to be changed.

I appreciate the info - it looks as if I'll have to go back to the dealer.
