overfilled oil question

Just to keep it short, I had the oil in our 2001 C-320 changed at a place that was staffed by total idiots. They put 9 1/2 quarts in a 7 1/2 crankcase. By the time I was able to correct it, I had put about 200 miles on the car.

Question: Did I do serious damage to the engine. I have since put about 1500 miles on the car, and all seems well, but MB tells me over filing crankcase is not good.

Thanks for any info.

Ken Gasbarri

Oh, and yes, I am aware that this is totally my fault. I should have known better.

Modern oils do not "froth" like the older ones did. From what I am told, that is what used to do the damage when the crankcase is too full. I had an oil consumption test done and they had to fill it to the MAX level on the dipstick. During the test I got a REDUCE OIL LEVEL warning from the car. I questioned the dealer and the above is what I was told.

If you only drove 200 miles with too much and have driven 1500 miles since correcting the level without noticeable symptoms, I doubt you have anything thing to worry about.

Theoretically overfill can do some damage when oil foams up to the pistons, but nobody proved the danger practically.
We had one member who reported that by drainage error he ended up with 18 quarts in his 9 quarts crankcase and the engine run just fine. He did not drove with it out of his driveway, so no clue if at high rpm that might do something to the engine, but I doubt 2 overfill does anything but raise you blood pressure.
