Question Car will not start

I have a 1990 500SL and when I put it in storage in the fall everything worked fine. When I took it out it took forever to get it started. At first I was not sure what the problem was but soon realised it was electrical. With the key in the on position there is nothing at all, guages don't move, lights don't come on but the radio did. In the start position it turns over no problem. From continuous tries, finally the dash light up and it started.

My question; is this an ignition problem or should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks
Wylde

Let me get this straight... Nothing lit up or worked with the key in position 2 but when you moved it to position 3 it cranked? It cranked without anything coming on? When you let the key go back to position 2 nothing happened?

Then all of a sudden position 2 worked and things lit up and the car started?
Sounds like the switch behind the lock cylinder. Or it could have been a loose connection at that switch.

I guess you will have to get to the switch either way.

Sorry

Yes, in position 2 only the radio comes on (always) but the dash lights and gauges don't come on or move. In position 3 it cranks normal but does not start. If I turn on and off a bunch of times, eventually it the dash gauges move and the lights come on then it starts.

So you would say it's the switch, ok. I was fearing it might be something else more serious and didn't want to buy a switch for nothing. Thanks for your help.

You are facing this issue on every start? Sometimes a problem with the battery also and in the serious case with engine also. After starting have you heard any noise from engine?first change your switch and update us.

No unusual noises from the engine and the battery is brand new and fully charge (on a "smart" trickle charger). I will update after I change the switch. Ordered one on Ebay since it was less than half the price my dealer wanted for it.

Angry

So I got my switch and changed it. Re-assembled and the car started first time but new problems. 1) after I took my key out, the accessories seem to stay on. 2) can't put my key back in, seems to be locked out. Grrrr. Now what do I do?

There may be a pin stuck up inside your lock cylinder. Try lubricating and jiggling the key inside. (not with WD-40) Or pick the lock with a piece of wire. Or remove the lock cylinder and clean the corrosion. May require special tool. Careful not to bend the key blade.

wiggled and jiggled the key and the steering wheel, finally went it and was able to turn the assembly to get the lock switch out again. Going to buy one from MB instead of eBay this time.

Back at square 1
